Engage Your Employees
Engaging your employees in a cause they believe in can be a great retention and recruiting tool for your company. That has been the experience of Expedia, one of the world’s leading travel service companies.
Expedia, with UNESCO and the UN Foundation, is a founding partner of Friends of World Heritage, a grassroots campaign to educate people to travel responsibly, and the World Heritage Alliance for Sustainable Tourism, an initiative that supports World Heritage conservation, sustainable tourism, and local economic development for communities in and around UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Expedia employees donate their time and expertise to provide community-based tourism companies with the tools and the skills they need to promote sustainable tourism and awareness of World Heritage sites.
The UN Foundation helps Expedia identify local community tour operators that could benefit from the employees’ skills in creating business plans, product and website development, and sales and marketing strategies.
Expedia employees also find the service program rewarding. Three Expedia employees recently traveled to Dominica and partnered with tour operators and hotel owners to help them draft business plans and marketing materials that emphasize the preservation of Dominica’s natural beauty and wildlife.
Brenda, an Expedia employee, remarked:
“My experience in Dominica reinforces the commitment I have made in my life to nurture community tourism in a way that makes environmental sustainability an income source for local residents. The people of this wonderful country have reminded me about the kind of person I want to be and the kind of world I want to live in. I am pleased that my company cares about sustainable tourism and the existence of the World Heritage Alliance gives me a sense of pride to work here.”
