  1. DataDyne.org

    Area of Involvement: Technology

    DataDyne.org was formed in 2003 by physician/epidemiologist Joel Selanikio, formerly of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and technologist Rose Donna, formerly of the American Red Cross, to increase the quantity and quality of data available for worldwide public health. DataDyne.org works with mobile information technologies including handheld computers, smartphones, the Internet, and GPS, to break down the barriers to data utilization and create sustainable data flows in developing countries. DataDyne.org's premier product is the award-winning EpiSurveyor, a free, open-source data-gathering software suite for handheld computers and smartphones. Based on the success of the pilot programs in Kenya and Zambia, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control is now using EpiSurveyor software in Sierra Leone.

    The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc., (IEEE) is a non-profit, technical professional association of over 380,000 individual members in 150 countries. Through its members, the IEEE is a leading authority in technical areas ranging from computer engineering, biomedical technology and telecommunications, to electric power, aerospace and consumer electronics, among others. Through its technical publishing, conferences and consensus-based standards activities, the IEEE produces 30 percent of the world's published literature in electrical and electronics engineering and computer sciences; holds annually more than 300 major conferences; and has nearly 900 active standards with about 700 under development.

Developing and growing our offering of consumer Internet services, as well as our enterprise solutions and software, is a key area of focus. We also provide equipment, solutions and services for communications networks through Nokia Siemens Networks.

  5. Telecoms Sans Frontieres

    Area of Involvement: Technology

    Télécoms Sans Frontières: the leading humanitarian NGO specialised in emergency telecommunications. With its 24-hour monitoring centre and relying on its operational bases in France, Nicaragua and in Thailand, Télécoms Sans Frontières (TSF) crews of IT and telecoms specialists can intervene anywhere in the world in less than 24 hours after any sudden onset disaster or conflict and in a matter of minutes set up a satellite-based telecoms centre offering broadband Internet, phone and fax lines. These centres enable emergency NGO, the United Nations and local authorities to communicate right at the heart of event. They also facilitate the coordination of aid efforts. In parallel, TSF also runs humanitarian calling operation to offer support and assistance to affected civilians, giving them a link with the outside world from which they would be otherwise completely cut off. Since its creation in 1998, TSF deployed to nearly 50 countries and assisted more than 350 relief organisations. In 2006, TSF became a partner of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). TSF is First Responder of the Emergency Telecommunications Cluster (ETC). Télécoms Sans Frontières is also a working group member of the United Nations emergency telecoms body (WGET). TSF is a partner of the Humanitarian Aid Department of the European Commission (ECHO) and a member of the International Council of Voluntary Agencies (ICVA).
