Saying NO to Violence Against Women
At least one out of three women around the world has been beaten or otherwise abused in her lifetime, and women aged 15 to 44 are more at risk of dying from rape and domestic violence than from cancer, motor accidents, war and malaria.
We work with the UN and other partners to end violence against the world’s women.
In January 2008, when the UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) approached us with their online petition “Say NO to Violence Against Women,” we wanted to help them expand the campaign. We issued a challenge grant that donated $1 to the trust fund for each of the first 100,000 signatures to UNIFEM’s online petition.
Hundreds of thousands of people signed the petition to stand up for women everywhere. We continue to work with the international community to end violence against women. In February 2008, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launched a multi-year campaign—complementing UNIFEM’s—to secure increased political support and resources to end violence against women and girls.
