Hans Vestberg (Sweden)
Hans Vestberg is the Executive Vice President and President of Network and Technology, Verizon. Prior to his current position, he was the President of the Swedish Olympic Committee and the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Ericsson Group, the world’s leading provider of telecommunications technology and services
Since 1991, Vestberg has held various management positions for Ericsson in China, Brazil, Mexico and the US. Vestberg was Ericsson’s Chief Financial Officer from 2007 to 2009, before becoming CEO.
He is a leading advocate of the Sustainable Development Goals, and for the potential of mobility, broadband and cloud solutions to tackle global challenges such as poverty, health, education, climate change and humanitarian response. He is a founding member of the Broadband Commission for Digital Development, and chaired the Commission’s climate-change working group as well as the Commission’s task group on the post-2015 development agenda. He is also a member of the Leadership Council of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Solutions Network. As of June 2015, Vestberg is also a member of the board of the UN Foundation.
In Sweden, Vestberg is part of the Prime Minister’s National Innovation Council (Innovationsrådet), to strengthen the country’s competitiveness. He was also the founding private sector representative of the Swedish Leadership for Sustainable Development, and initiative of SIDA, the Swedish International Development Agency, and some 20 CEOs from Swedish industry, which aim to find long term solutions to today's major sustainable development challenges.
Diversity and inclusion is another topic close to Vestberg’s heart, and he has stated that having a diverse workforce is the basis for innovation and success. His commitment is visible in the appointments he made as CEO, where female representation has grown from 1 to 5 among his direct reports. The company has also set a goal of having 30 percent of Ericsson’s workforce made up of women by 2020, up from the current 22 percent. Vestberg also works closely with Ericsson’s Young Advisory Board, a team of young employees with leadership potential, with the mission to bring new perspectives and innovative ideas.
Vestberg’s leadership commitment can be seen just as much as in his personal life as his professional one. Outside of work, he is the chairman of the Swedish Handball Association, having played professionally for many years, and today is very much engaged in the development of youth through sports and building teams. He is on the Advisory board of The Performance Theater Foundation, a non-profit organization aimed at inspiring the leadership required to realize a new kind of growth, capable of delivering value across not just reporting quarters but generations, to both shareholders and society as a whole.
He is a leading voice at industry conferences including Mobile World Congress, Code/Mobile and the Consumer Electronics Show. He is also a member of the Telecom Governors of the World Economic Forum.
In 2014, Vestberg was ranked #10 on Global Telecoms Business’ list of the 100 most powerful people in the telecoms industry.
Along with the rest of Ericsson’s Executive Team, Vestberg is focused on advancing the company’s leadership through innovation, technology, services and sustainable business solutions. Under his direction, Ericsson has become the main driver toward the Networked Society, where connectivity is the fuel of progress, and where he has boldly added Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility to the overall performance metrics of the company, a truly triple bottom line approach.
