CHARCA is a coordinated effort among UN agencies in India to increase capacities and reduce vulnerabilities of young women in India to reduce HIV and sexually transmitted infections, thereby empowering women and girls to protect themselves. The goal of this initiative is to raise awareness, decrease vulnerability, and reduce risk among young women in select districts in India through community ownership, greater involvement of people with AIDS, participatory learning, building on existing strengths, a multi sectoral approach, innovative strategies, sustainability and replication. CHARCA is one of the first district-wide HIV/AIDS interventions for young women in the general population in India.
The Joint UN Program website for CHARCA, You and AIDS, serves as a resource for events, resources, program highlights, and stories of women and girls who are reached by this initiative.
