Promoting Safe Motherhood in Nepal

Agency Funded: United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)

Amount Funded: $600,000 over 24 months
Approved: November 2001

The 1994 International Conference on Population and Development acknowledged the fundamental right of women to have a healthy pregnancy and access to quality health care, yet world wide, over half a million women die in pregnancy and childbirth each year. Maternal mortality is unacceptably high in Nepal, where it is the leading cause of death among women of reproductive age. This project, implemented by UNFPA and the US Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with the Nepalese Ministry of Health, seeks to reduce maternal mortality by increasing access to and improving the quality of maternal health services at the community level. The project will serve as a catalyst for all the agencies working for maternal health in Nepal.
