Protecting
Migrant Populations in Central America from HIV/AIDS
Agency Funded: Joint UN
Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS)
Amount Funded: $2,000,000 over 36 months
Approved: November 2001
Over the past five years,
the migrant populations of Mexico and Central
America primarily employed in the clothing production
industries of these countries has risen to more
than 30% of the total population. These migrant
workers are primarily adolescent girls and women.
As a group, they are the highest risk population
for HIV infections and sexually transmitted diseases.
UNAIDS, in concert with its UN agency cosponsors
and in collaboration with other major bilateral
donors, will strengthen the strategic planning
processes in Mexico and the Central American region
in addressing the needs of adolescent girls who
are migrants and are therefore most vulnerable
to HIV/AIDS.
