The New Nigeria Foundation
(NNF), established by UNDP with UN Foundation
funding in late 1999, has firmly established a
community-based health services program in the
Niger River delta region of Nigeria. This project
will assist over 160,000 villagers in nine local
government areas to begin addressing self-identified
health needs. Specifically, the project aims to
maintain the momentum of community health activities
established, strengthen the managerial capacity
of the NNF, and initiate two new pilot activities
in environment and youth employment. The project
promotes cooperation among UN agencies and a partnership
between the UN and local NGOs to provide technical
guidance to village-based health communities at
the grassroots level as a critical element in
civil society and public-private partnership linkages.
