Assessing the
Biofuels Options
International Energy Agency
Co-sponsored by the UN Foundation, International
Energy Agency and the Government of Brazil
June 20 – 21, 2005
The recent sustained increase in international
oil prices has once again highlighted the potential
for biofuels to contribute to transport fuel demand,
particularly in countries that import the bulk
of fossil fuel supplies. Global concerns about
the effects of fossil fuel use on the environment,
as well as recognition of the benefits of energy
supply diversification also support increasing
biofuels production and use.
The seminar explored the near-term and longer-term
global prospects for biofuels for transport, focusing
mainly on the development of new markets.

2005 Institutional Investor Summit on
Climate Risk
May 10, 2005
More than 300 institutional investors, brokerage
firm representatives, asset managers, and others
in the financial sector met at UN Headquarters
to look at how two issues can be addressed. The
first is risks: investors want to protect
their portfolio values against the financial impact
of climate change. And second, the opportunities:
how do investors channel capital to realize
the opportunities emerging to address climate
change and realize a return on their investment
that helps fulfill their pension obligations.

Sustainable Energy
Development Practitioners Conference
May 29-31, 2004
Since it was founded in 1998, the United Nations
Foundation has committed more than $60 million
to over 60 projects promoting renewable energy
and energy efficiency around the world. The Sustainable
Energy Development Practitioners Conference gathered
many of the participants in these projects in
May 2004, immediately preceding the global conference
Renewables2004 in Bonn, in order to draw from
their experience and identify the barriers and
solutions for accelerating and expanding access
to modern energy services in off-grid areas.
