Empowering Local Communities to Improve
Children’s Health in Ten Latin American
Countries
Agency Funded: Pan American
Health Organization (PAHO)
Amount Funded: $4,500,000 over 24 months
Approved: November 2001
This project aims to reduce
morbidity and mortality among children under five
years of age in ten Latin American countries.
Supported by the Pan American Health Organization
(PAHO) and the American Red Cross, this project
will promote household behaviors that prevent
childhood illnesses as well as intensify community
implementation of these behaviors; develop a long-distance
learning community health course; and document
project experiences and share success stories
with other regions. Thousands of American Red
Cross volunteers, with the help of other NGOs,
will increase the capacity of the UN to carry
out this ambitious community-based effort on a
region-wide basis.
