(June 26, 2009) —Statement by Timothy E. Wirth, President, United Nations Foundation, on the Waxman-Markey climate change legislation slated for debate and a potential vote in the House of Representatives today:
“This legislation is the first step toward an energy policy for the 21st century. It will lead to technology innovation, good domestic jobs, less use of oil, and more protection of the world we live in. When and where scientists say that we must move boldly and urgently to prevent the worst effects of climate change, it could and should be strengthened -- but like most legislation, this bill was built with a political blueprint in mind. And Henry Waxman once again showed that he is the best legislative craftsman in Congress.”
