Haiti Earthquake Response

Issue Area: UN-US Relations

With donations from and cooperation between partner organizations, individuals, and governments, the UN has made progress toward the rebuilding and recovery of Haiti after the January 12 earthquake. The UN Foundation continues to work closely with the United Nations and the donor community to assist the people of Haiti in the long-term reconstruction efforts.

Read our fact sheet on the UN Foundation and UN's Haiti response.

In the months following the earthquake, the UN Foundation has raised more than $3.9 million in grassroots donations*:

  • $2.4 million was given to the UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF)
  • $240,000 was granted to the UN Development Program’s (UNDP) Cash-for-Work program
  • With the help of AMERICAN IDOL viewers, $250,000 went to the UN Population Fund (UNFPA)

Our support focused on helping the UN:

  • Secure and deliver food and water to millions of Haitians
  • Deliver medical supplies and coordinate relief efforts
  • Facilitate emergency communication efforts for survivors and the international aid community
  • Provide jobs to more than 200,000 people
  • Work with Haiti’s Ministry of Health to prevent the spread of diseases such as malaria and measles
  • Ensure that women have healthy pregnancies and give birth safely through the distribution of maternal health kits
  • Keep women and girls safe from sexual assault and violence with solar street lighting
  • Connect with donors and governments to plan emergency humanitarian response and long-term efforts

Donate now to help the UN’s continued relief and recovery efforts in Haiti.

The current tragedy, especially the lack of sturdy housing in Haiti is entirely inexcusable: Right after the earthquake, I wrote to Kay Bailey Hutchison, my Senator in Washington, advising her that sturdy conex containers were piling up on US Highway 45 just south of our Dallas Metroplex. At the time, I recommended to her to make transportation available for these unwanted containers to deliver them to Haiti, and train the indigenous people in that country to modify them as housing. NO ACTION, was made, and the sordid result is now history!

Our prayers and support are with the people of Haiti and all of you who have come to the aid of this horrific catastrophe. The United Nations along with all the other relief organizations will be a an ongoing hope and restoration for this country that has endured so many huge calamities. Thank you for being there. Thank God for the humanitarian efforts of the UN and other charities which are helping in Haiti. It is in times of crisis that man bands together and allows the best of itself to be revealed. Regards, Ruhullah
