David Cook Visits UN's Biruh Tesfa program in Ethiopia

Issue Area: Women & Population

"Women are the backbone of our society."

So said David Cook, Season 7 winner of AMERICAN IDOL, who traveled to Ethiopia in March 2010 as a guest of the United Nations Foundation.

There, David learned about the challenges adolescent girls face in many parts of the world, and visited the United Nations’ Biruh Tesfa (Bright Future) Project to see firsthand how the UN Foundation is supporting the work of the UN to educate and empower girls.

Footage of Cook’s trip to Ethiopia will be featured during IDOL GIVES BACK, the Emmy-winning television event and musical celebration developed by AMERICAN IDOL creator Simon Fuller, on Wednesday, April 21 (8:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed) on FOX. Ethiopian causes could use the David Cook electricity to get more enthusiasm for $ and other types of donataions. Also check the Fistula Hospital and the Adua Clinic for other worthy causes. He's amazing. I hope he fosters/adopts that beautiful girl.

I love that he is spending time calling attention to this program! Hopefully some good will come out of his presence there. This program is doing so much to help young women to have a better future. I love that David is making good use of his fame. I have already made my Idol Gives Back donation and encouraging others to do the same!

Even though he is a multi-talented musician/songwriter who performs melt-your-face rock, it is his great big, kind open heart that really sets him apart. Oh I know there are celebs "doing causes" - but when you follow DC you begin to understand how real and sincere he is. Kind of an oddity in today's world, but in the best way possible. Even tho he has 3 Platinum records and a hugely successful tour under his belt, don't expect him to be booked on Oprah, late night talk shows or featured on Extra or E!. He's not ever going to be tabloid fodder and he's going to build his career on great music rather than shock and shallowness. However, because he's such a class & quality guy,he has built a solid fanbase of people who would follow him to the ends of the earth. And if he stands for a cause, they will support it.

Really very impressive. Such effort can change the life of the people who are afraid of to think that they are also the precious part of the earth.

What a gentleman! I'm proud to have David Cook representing us, and look forward to hearing from him on IGB. David and the girls definitely are sharing a moment of joy. Thank you for sharing these pictures. I hope that I can follow David's lead and make a difference by donating to these girls.

This is so moving and it brings tears to my eyes because I know that David Cook really cares when he is doing something for someone else and the smiles on these beautiful little girls prove it. He loves children and they love him and he is a TRUE AMERICAN IDOL. I would love to see he and Oprah talk about this. Please, powers that be, get him on Oprah. David cook is an amazing talent and his heart is as hugh as his voice.
