Saving lives through soccer at World Cup 2010

Millions of people around the globe focused their attention on the 2010 World Cup through June and July. And as exciting as the soccer matches are on their own and the drama that surrounds them, more important is that the malaria community has taken this opportunity to spread the buzz about saving lives – matching the buzz of the vuvuzelas.

Beginning in 2009 and into 2010, soccer teams and stars, governments, foundations, corporations, and thousands of people joined forces through United Against Malaria to fight malaria in the lead up to the World Cup. The UN Foundation and our Nothing But Nets campaign joined this coalition’s effort to raise awareness about malaria by leveraging the sports community and this event, held on the African continent for the first time – the place where malaria is a leading killer of children under five.

As part of this effort, Nothing But Nets and United Against Malaria spread the word about sending nets, saving lives, and kicking it to malaria in 2010 through the 16-city Buzz Tour across the U.S., through the World Malaria Day Eve Sleep Out to End Malaria, and now through World Cup.
