And as exciting as the soccer matches are on their own and the drama that surrounds them, more important is that the malaria community has taken this opportunity to spread the buzz about saving lives – matching the buzz of the vuvuzelas.

  3. U.S. Energy Policy: The Opportunities Available Now

    In a June 16 speech to United States Energy Association/Johnson Controls Energy Efficiency Forum, United Nations Foundation President Timothy E. Wirth emphasized five crucial components that should form the cornerstones of a new energy policy for the United States.  The speech was given just hours after President Obama addressed the nation in response to the unfolding environmental crisis in the Gulf of Mexico.

    During the 2010 Summit Series in DC, one phrase in particular was making the rounds at the water cooler, posted and reposted on Twitter, and pondered upon by all: “We don’t have a long-term plan for humanity.”

  5. From potatoes to pride: One girl's journey with Biruh Tesfa

    [This story comes from our Women & Population team, who recently traveled to Ethiopia with David Cook, season 7 winner of AMERICAN IDOL. Learn more about David's trip here.] Tigist Tsegaye is one of the bravest, most inspiring young women our team has ever met. Tigist left the Amhara region when she was just 14, now 5 years ago. She came by bus, and when she was dropped off in the Merkato bus station, she was left for brokers to find an employer in need of a house girl. But one year ago her life changed. A mentor convinced her employers to let her attend the Biruh Tesfa school, and now with just 6 months left in the program, Tigist’s eyes light up talking about how much she has learned.

  6. Climate change gets personal at Copenhagen

    Copenhagen is more than the capital of Denmark. It’s home to Europe’s longest pedestrian street (the Strøget). It’s the birthplace of LEGO building blocks. And from Dec. 7-18, 2009, it hosted the next significant step in combating climate change as world leaders gathered to develop a new global agreement. 

  7. David Cook Visits UN's Biruh Tesfa program in Ethiopia

    Season 7 American Idol winner David Cook visited programs in Ethiopia to see firsthand how the UN Foundation is supporting the work of the UN to educate and empower girls. Footage from Cook’s trip will be featured during IDOL GIVES BACK, on Wednesday, April 21, 8pm ET.

  8. VIDEO: Senator Timothy E. Wirth on This Is America

    Area of Involvement: Children’s Health; Climate & Energy; UN-US Relations; Women & Population

    Senator Wirth discusses the work of the UN Foundation to help the UN address some of the world’s most pressing issues.  He reviews the history of the founding of the Foundation and outlines ways that the United Nations is more relevant today than ever in bringing about positive global change.

Throughout its history, the United Nations has worked to ensure that all the world’s women and girls have the opportunity to live in dignity,free from want and from fear. For International Women's Day on March 8, join us in supporting the UN in its efforts to champion women and girls.  

  10. Usher Inspires Youth to Mobilize for Haiti

    In the wake of the devastating earthquake in Haiti, music legend Usher Raymond IV teamed up with us to help the victims. Through his non-profit, Usher's New Look, Usher challenged young people to raise $5 each to help the United Nations’ emergency response.
