Statement of UN Foundation President & CEO Kathy Calvin on Announcement of New U.S. Government Coordinator in the Global Fight Against Malaria
Calvin highlights the importance of strong U.S. leadership in the fight against malaria
Washington, D.C. — April 10, 2018
United Nations Foundation President and CEO Kathy Calvin released the following statement today on the announcement of Kenneth William Staley as the new Coordinator of United States Government Activities to Combat Malaria Globally.
“The United Nations Foundation congratulates Dr. Kenneth Staley on his appointment to the role of U.S. Global Malaria Coordinator. He has the experience, know how, and commitment to lead the vital efforts of the United States to combat malaria.
“Dr. Staley’s appointment comes at a pivotal time in the fight against malaria – a treatable and preventable disease that still threatens the lives of nearly half the world’s population. While important progress has been made against the disease, just last year, the World Health Organization reported the first increase in malaria incidence rates since 2000, reaffirming the need for strong U.S. leadership through programs like the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI).
“As the coordinator, Dr. Staley can build on the progress made by PMI in reducing malaria cases and saving lives. Dr. Staley will have a strong foundation to work from, created in large part by the efforts of previous coordinators like Admiral Tim Ziemer, who successfully led PMI for the last decade.
“The United Nations Foundation and its Nothing But Nets campaign are committed to working with the United Nations, the United States, and partners to reach a world where no child dies of a mosquito bite. We look forward to working with Dr. Staley and continuing our support for strong U.S. leadership in moving us to a malaria-free world.”
