United Nations Foundation President and CEO Kathy Calvin today welcomed the appointment of Dr. Natalia Kanem as the new Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) with the following statement:

“Dr. Kanem has committed her career to advancing public health and social justice, and has been a dedicated champion of girls’ and women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights around the world. The United Nations Foundation looks forward to working with Dr. Kanem to advance UNFPA’s vision of creating a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.

“UNFPA works in 150 countries providing services such as voluntary family planning, midwife training, prenatal care, and safe delivery. It also operates in the hardest-to-reach places struck by crisis, conflict, and natural disaster, helping meet the specific needs of girls, women, and young people in the most vulnerable situations. Under Dr. Kanem’s leadership, UNFPA can continue to advance the health and rights of girls, women, and youth across the globe, empowering them to take control of their lives and pursue their dreams.”
