Kathy Calvin, president and CEO of the United Nations Foundation, today congratulated Samantha Power on her nomination as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, and recognized the exceptional strides made by Ambassador Susan Rice during her time in the role. In a statement, Calvin said:

“The nomination of Samantha Power is welcome news for the overwhelming majority of Americans who value a strong U.S.-UN relationship.  A key influencer in the decision for the U.S. to rejoin the Human Rights Council, Power’s nomination is also an affirmation of a strong U.S. commitment to human rights. Her distinguished career has put a needed spotlight on civilian protection in a variety of circumstances, including recently in Libya. Power has also been an outspoken and knowledgeable advocate on preventing genocide and has a clear, balanced understanding of the value of the UN in fighting against it. Power has chronicled the historic work of UN diplomat and human rights champion Sérgio Vieira de Mello, and she has also at times been critical of the world’s too-slow response to atrocities. Certainly, she understands the value of international burden-sharing, as well as opportunities to help make the UN even stronger.

“No doubt, outgoing Ambassador Susan Rice has left an outstanding legacy for U.S.-UN relations. Under her leadership, the U.S. has paid its dues to the UN, demonstrating that when the U.S. remains engaged, we not only ensure U.S. interests are protected, but also further the UN’s vital work on behalf of peace, security, global health, and human rights around the world.  Indeed, from leading key Security Council achievements to cultivating important diplomatic relationships that yield results, Susan Rice has bolstered our nation’s reputation and laudably advanced our foreign policy objectives.

“The United Nations Foundation and its sister organization the Better World Campaign congratulate Ambassador Rice on an accomplished tenure at the UN, and we look forward to working with Ms. Power pending her confirmation by the Senate.”
