Global Problems Can be Solved

Ted Turner Statement on Ban Ki-moon Intentions to Run for Second Term as United Nations Secretary-General

Washington, DC —   June 6, 2011

United Nations Foundation Founder and Chairman Ted Turner released the following statement today in reaction to Ban Ki-moon’s announcement that he will seek a second term as Secretary-General of the United Nations.

“We need a leader at the United Nations who can help us solve today’s big problems, and Ban Ki-moon has proven he’s someone who is committed to seeing the job through and will work tirelessly to get it done right. Now more than ever, the UN must continue to build trust with global leaders around the world, forge partnerships that work, and mobilize people into taking positive action, as it has under Ban.

“I have had the opportunity to work with and learn from the best-of-the-best in business, philanthropy, and global politics, and Ban is a leader who can bring people around the table to get things done. I see Ban’s tenure at the UN as a story of challenges that didn’t get in the way of progress. One good example is the UN’s instrumental role in the fight against polio and the effort to reduce malaria. The UN should be proud of its accomplishments to date, but shouldn’t rest until problems like this are solved and these diseases are history.

“Recent polling shows that a majority of Americans consider the UN an organization that is vital to advancing the goals of peace and security. I agree, and know that strong leadership at the UN is key to making this a reality.

“I hope that people everywhere use this time to talk about the Secretary-General’s next term and how we can help him achieve his vision for a 21st-century UN that builds a better world for us all.”

We build and implement public/private partnerships to address the world’s most pressing problems, and work to broaden support for the UN through advocacy and public outreach. Through our campaigns and partnerships, we connect people, ideas, and resources to help the UN solve global problems. These campaigns focus on reducing child mortality, empowering women and girls, creating a new energy future, securing peace and human rights, and promoting technology innovation to improve health outcomes.
