Global Problems Can be Solved

United Nations Foundation Supports Emergency Communications in Haiti

Partnership with UN Foundation, Vodafone Foundation enables Télécoms Sans Frontières to establish satellite phone and internet lines in Port-au-Prince

Washington, DC —   January 18, 2010

Caption: For many, satellite-based call centers provide the first connection with the outside world since the earthquake hit. Here, survivors in Port-au-Prince use free satellite phone lines established by Télécoms Sans Frontières with funding from the UN Foundation & Vodafone Foundation.

The United Nations Foundation & Vodafone Foundation Technology Partnership supported the emergency deployment of a team of experts from UN partner organization Télécoms Sans Frontières to establish emergency telecommunications systems in the wake of the 7.0 earthquake that struck Haiti last week.  With lack of communications networks hampering relief efforts, these satellite-based phone and internet lines are enabling humanitarian groups to quickly and effectively coordinate the distribution of aid and supplies in the country’s devastated capital. From the heart of the crisis, these emergency lines of communication also provide survivors with the chance to finally reconnect with family and loved ones.

The UN Foundation & Vodafone Foundation Technology Partnership is a leading public-private alliance dedicated to leveraging the power of communications technologies to strengthen the UN’s humanitarian work worldwide.
