United Nations Foundation President Timothy E. Wirth, today released the following statement on the nomination of Anthony Lake as UNICEF Chief:

“The nomination of Tony Lake as UNICEF chief underscores the importance that the Administration places on the urgent need to address children’s health issues around the world.  Mr. Lake’s leadership credentials and deep understanding of international issues that directly impact the health and welfare of children will be a great asset in this role.  His foreign policy expertise and experience working with the US Fund for UNICEF will also make an invaluable contribution to UNICEF’s work moving forward.

“Just last month, we saw the critical role of UNICEF in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Haiti.  As first responders, UNICEF was on the ground to distribute clean water to those affected by the disaster.  UNICEF’s unique focus and long-term commitment to the recovery and revitalization of Haiti will ensure that the well-being of children is at the heart of the international community’s work to help Haiti re-build its future.”
