Global Problems Can be Solved

'Digital Lounge' Takes UN Meetings to a Virtual Audience

Mashable, UN Foundation, and 92nd Street Y Connect Bloggers, Activists, Celebrities

New York, NY —   September 22, 2010

As world leaders gather at UN headquarters for the UN General Assembly and Millennium Development Review Summit, up the road, 92nd Street Y, Mashable and the United Nations Foundation are hosting a non-traditional mix of social media experts, United Nations VIPs, celebrities, and journalists for an event that is changing the way the public engages in major UN meetings. The UN Week Digital Media Loungealready has brought together hundreds of bloggers and journalists for an unprecedented on-line conversation joined by thousands more through live-streaming and Skype connections. Conversations include experts on global health, women’s issues, disaster relief, poverty reduction, and human rights.

British singer Craig David opened up the sessions on Tuesday, leading into a non-stop line-up of experts ranging from United Nations diplomats, NGO and faith-based leaders, and celebrities. Amnesty International Secretary-General Salil Shetty closed the lounge late Tuesday with a face-to-face session with bloggers on the biggest challenges and successes in reaching the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).  

Wednesday’s schedule features live discussions with U.S. diplomat and Assistant Secretary of State Esther Brimmer, experts on women and girls, and hip-hop artists Lupe Fiasco and Kenna on how the music community is assisting UN efforts in Pakistan and the victims of natural disasters. The Digital Media Lounge also is live broadcasting the United Nations meeting where a new global strategy on women and children’s health is being unveiled. As a last-minute addition, #1 best-selling author Marianne Williamson dropped by to discuss women, faith, and advocacy on global issues.

Thursday and Friday will include informal talks with USAID Administrator Raj Shah, and a unique session with mothers who blog. Discussions have not only offered new perspectives on global issues but are linking new social media with advocacy and education in advancing these issues.  

About the UN Week Digital Media Lounge
Hosted at 92Y, the fully wired Digital Media Lounge provides the on-line community exclusive access to high-level UN officials and international leaders. Newsmakers and experts in global issues and social media will talk with bloggers and journalists both in person and through a Skype video calling facility. The event will is streamed online with Livestream.com.

The week’s conversations will be all tied to the Millennium Development Goals. These goals set by world leaders and adopted by the United Nations in 2000, focus on massive reductions in poverty and hunger; promotion of universal primary education; gender equality; reduction in child deaths and the deaths of women in childbirth; the fight against HIV/AIDS and other diseases, and environmental sustainability.
