Global Problems Can be Solved

Statement by Timothy E. Wirth, President of the UN Foundation, regarding the Obama Administration's decision to run for a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council

March 31, 2009

The UN Foundation congratulates the Obama Administration on its decision to run this year for a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council.  The Human Rights Council has great potential to promote human rights globally, but strong leadership from the United States is required to maximize its potential.  By running for a seat on the Council this year, the Obama Administration will be well positioned to fight for change in the Council to ensure that countries that routinely abuse globally-recognized human rights are held accountable.  This decision demonstrates the Administration’s commitment to multilateral engagement and to re-claiming a leadership position for the United States on the international human rights agenda.
