Global Problems Can be Solved

Statement by Reid Detchon, Executive Director, Energy Future Coalition

On the Senate vote on economic recovery legislation

February 10, 2009

"With the economy in free fall, no industry is hurting more than housing and construction.  Skilled workers and contractors stand ready to get back to work.  All they need now is a smart stimulus package that provides funds which reflect the scale of the challenges, and opportunities, at hand.

"The House-passed version recognizes that energy efficiency and weatherization programs provide the best opportunity for job growth and energy savings.  Last night President Obama issued a strong statement of support for this approach.   Regrettably, the version which passed the Senate today cuts the House funding nearly in half.  Adopting the House figure in conference will put thousands more back to work, and deliver long-term savings to consumers."
