Global Problems Can be Solved

UN Foundation Announces Special Account for Global AIDS and Health Fund

Washington, DC —   August 9, 2001

In response to a request from United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the United Nations Foundation has established a special account to permit those who wish to make donations in support of the global effort to combat HIV/AIDS to do so immediately. The special account for the Global AIDS and Health Fund was set up following the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on HIV/AIDS last week in New York. The Session – the latest indication that this pandemic has become an urgent international crisis – adopted a declaration of commitment that set out clear goals for a global battle against the disease.

The special account for the global fund also responds to the "Call to Action" by United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who has urged greater coordination among nations and a strong political and financial commitment to support efforts to combat the disease.

The account will accept contributions from individuals, corporations, organizations and others wanting to support the battle against HIV/AIDS globally. Such contributions will be held in the special account pending the establishment of the Global AIDS and Health Fund, which the Secretary-General called for in his opening statement before the Special Session.

"Establishing this account falls squarely within the Foundation’s mission of promoting public-private partnerships to meet global challenges and to facilitate support to that end from all interested parties," said Timothy E. Wirth, President of the UN Foundation. "HIV/AIDS knows no border – it affects everyone in the world. The UN Foundation is proud to play a role by addressing this important need and establishing an account so donations to this effort can be simple and straightforward."

The United Nations Foundation was created in 1998 with businessman and philanthropist R.E. Turner’s historic gift to support UN causes. The United Nations Foundation promotes a more peaceful, prosperous, and just world through the support of the United Nations and its Charter. Through its grantmaking and by building new and innovative public-private partnerships, the United Nations Foundation acts to meet the most pressing health, humanitarian, socioeconomic, and environmental challenges of the 21st century.
