Helping the United Nations Make a Difference

Interview with Awa Dieng of DataDyne.org

By the end of 2008, the UN Foundation-Vodafone Foundation Technology Partnership—working with the UN World Health Organization, national Ministries of Health, and the NGO DataDyne.org—will have brought a new mobile health (mHealth) program to more than 20 countries throughout sub-Saharan Africa.

In many of these countries, previously information about disease outbreaks and medical supplies was gathered on paper—a time consuming and labor intensive process. Now, using the free, open source and mobile-enabled EpiSurveyor software, health workers are able to more quickly and accurately transmit health data from the field, giving decision-makers a powerful new tool to fight deadly diseases and improve patient health care.
