Statement by Timothy E. Wirth, President of the
Better World Fund on Senate Hearing of Ambassador
Zalmay Khalilzad,
Nominee for U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations
“I was greatly encouraged
to hear Ambassador Khalilzad call the United Nations
the most successful institution for the promotion
of peace in the world’s history. Ambassador
Khalilzad also cited the work of the UN in Afghanistan
as a shining example of the UN’s potential
to have a ‘profound positive impact’
on global security.
“We hope the U.S.
Senate will move quickly to consider the nomination
of Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, who signaled today
his appreciation for constructive U.S. engagement
with the world. We face unprecedented challenges
and opportunities at the UN—from nuclear
proliferation to global warming. Rapid action
by the Senate will ensure the United States is
represented at the highest level in these discussions.”
