The
United Nations Foundation Launches UN
Dispatch,
a Blog about the United Nations
WASHINGTON—The
United Nations Foundation has launched
UN Dispatch (www.undispatch.com), a blog
intended to promote thoughtful and balanced
discussion about the United Nations, and
to provide an outlet for important, and
often overlooked, news and views on the
UN. UN Dispatch is sponsored by the UN
Foundation, and is moderated by Peter
Daou, author of the Daou Report, a bipartisan
digest of political blogs (http://daoureport.salon.com).
“With
thousands of voices everyday on the internet
engaging in a dialogue about the UN, we
wanted to provide a forum for balanced
views, factual information, and first-hand
accounts of UN activities. We hope people
will read UN Dispatch regularly to get
a full sense of who the United Nations
is, what it does, and why it is a valuable
institution,” said UN Foundation
President Timothy E. Wirth.
UN
Dispatch has already been receiving praise
from well-known bloggers from all perspectives
who agree the site has proven to be a
unique and worthy place to find information
about the United Nations:
•
From PORPHYROGENITUS,
"I'm a harsh critic of the UN …But
still, I recommend checking out [UN Dispatch],
which gives a rounded view of the institution
as a whole, and presents another side."
•
From CROOKED
TIMBER, "Blogs like the newly
created UN Dispatch can fill an unmet
need, giving us a take on the UN that
isn’t limited to cheap gotchas about
corruption and sex scandals. It’s
being run by Peter Daou, whose Daou report
has just moved to Salon, and it looks
to be a very interesting and useful resource.
UN Dispatch is run out of Ted Turner’s
UN Foundation, so it can be expected to
take a broadly pro-UN line - but on first
glance, it appears to be rather stronger
on actual factual information about the
strengths and weaknesses of the UN than
any of the other blogs opining on UN-related
issues. One that I’ll be reading.”
•
From OXBLOG,
"In response to the overwhelming
emphasis in the blogosphere on scandals
and corruption at the United Nations,
Peter Daou has started up a blog called
UN Dispatch that focuses on some of the
good, humanitarian work for which the
UN should be recognized."
The
United Nations Foundation was created
in 1998 with businessman and philanthropist
Ted Turner’s historic $1 billion
gift to support United Nations causes.
Through grantmaking and by building new
and innovative public-private partnerships,
the UN Foundation acts to meet the most
pressing challenges of the 21st century.
The UN Foundation also works to strengthen
the US-UN relationship and broaden support
for the UN through public education, advocacy
and outreach.
