WASHINGTON — The United Nations Foundation (UN Foundation) announced today the appointment of Debra DeShong as Director of Communications and Public Affairs. In this position, DeShong will direct the advocacy and communications work of the UN Foundation.
“ Debra DeShong’s vast background in management, strategy, politics and communications at the national and local level, will enhance our already strong Public Affairs team. She will be a real asset for the Foundation and the UN,” said Senator Timothy E. Wirth, President of the UN Foundation.

relationship through public education, advocacy

a free global news brief e-mailed five days a
week; sponsors The People Speak: America’s
Role in the World, a series of nationwide
discussions on international policy; and, educates
about the Oil-for-Food Program through the website
www.oilforfoodfacts.org.
Prior to joining the UN Foundation, DeShong worked as a Senior Communications Advisor for the Kerry/Edwards presidential campaign. While managing the 35-person press operation, DeShong was a spokesperson for the campaign, appearing regularly on television.
Before working for the Kerry/Edwards campaign, DeShong was the Democratic National Committee’s Communications Director. Prior to that, she was Communications Director for Senator Robert Torricelli (D-NJ). Additionally, DeShong has served as press secretary to Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-MD) as well as on the successful Blanche Lincoln Senate race in Arkansas. She has worked at the local levels of government and media, serving as Communications Director for the New Jersey Democratic State Committee and was a news supervisor and general on-air assignment reporter for WBTW-TV (CBS) in Myrtle Beach, SC. DeShong received a Masters in Journalism from Northwestern University and her undergraduate degree from Fairfield University.
Debra DeShong will report to Amy Weiss, Vice President for Public Affairs.
