Simonetta Sommaruga, President of the Swiss Federal Council, 2015

Simonetta Sommaruga was the President of the Swiss Federal Council in 2015 and and  is a current member of the Swiss Federal Council and head of the Federal Department of Justice and Police. Sommaruga was elected President of the Swiss Federal Council on December 3rd, 2014, after serving as Vice President of the Swiss Confederation and Head of the Federal Department of Justice and Police. Sommaruga was born in Zug, Switzerland, and attended the University of Fribourg, studying English and Romance studies. Sommaruga started her political career as part of the Grand Council of Bern in 1981, and worked her way up through the municipal government in Köniz and the National Council of Switzerland. In 2003, Sommaruga was elected to the upper chamber of the Council of States as a representative of the Canton of Bern. She eventually rose to being elected to the Swiss Federal Council on September 22nd, 2010. Sommaruga has been the president of the Swiss Consumer Protection Foundation since 1999 and the president of Swissaid since 2003. Along with federal councillors and Council members Doris Leuthard, Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf, and Micheline Calmy-Rey, she is a patron of SAFFA 2020. Simonetta Sommaruga is married to Lukas Hartmann and currently lives in Spiegel.
