Megawati Sukarnoputri: President, Indonesia, 2001-2004
Megawati Sukarnoputri was the president of Indonesia from 2001 to 2004. The daughter of Indonesia’s first leader after its independence, Sukarnoputri did not join the political realm herself until 1987 when she ran to be a representative. After her term as representative, she rose to become Chairwoman of her political party, the Indonesian Democratic Party or PDI. Her faction of the party would later be known as the PDI-P. In 1999 she became Vice President after having been narrowly defeated in the presidential election. She assumed the presidency after President Wahid was removed from office in 2001. Her time in office is best noted for her work in cementing the democratic process in Indonesia and how the different branches of government relate to each other. Sukarnoputri is a mother of three and enjoys gardening.
