Sirimavo Bandaranaike: Prime Minister, Sri Lanka 1960-1965, 1970-1977, 1994-2000, d.2000
IN MEMORY: Sirimavo Bandaranaike became the leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) after her husband, the former Prime Minister, was assassinated in 1959. Bandaranaike served as Prime Minister of Sri Lanka for three terms, 1960-1965, 1970-1977 and 1994-2000. She was the world’s first female Prime Minister. Her children are also major political figures: her daughter, Chandrika Kumaratunga, is the third President of Sri Lanka, and her son, Anura Bandaranaike, is the former Speaker and Minister.
