Mary McAleese: President, Ireland, 1997-2011

Mary Patricia McAleese was the President of Ireland from 1997 until 2011, directly succeeding fellow female President Mary Robinson. She is also the first Irish President from Northern Ireland. Before becoming President, she was a barrister, journalist, and an academic. She is Ireland’s second female president and the world’s first women to succeed another woman elected Head of State. Since November 19, 2005, she is the longest-serving female elected Head of State. On May 2007, she was awarded The American Ireland fund Humanitarian Award.
