Maria Das Neves: Prime Minister, São Tomé and Príncipe, 2002-2004

Maria das Neves was appointed as the archipelago of São Tomé and Príncipe's first female Prime Minister after the former Prime Minister, Gabriel Costa, was fired. The President at the time asked Neves, a 44-year old economist, to form a new government. The São Tomé and Príncipe Liberation Movement (MLSTP) party proposed her for the post. Prior to her Prime Ministership, she served as the Minister of Economics and the Minister of Finance. Neves was Minister for Trade, Industry and Tourism in the former administration, and before that she worked for the World Bank and UNICEF.
