The UN Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women
In 1996, the UN General Assembly established a unique trust fund, administered by UNIFEM on behalf of the UN system, to support actions to end violence against women and girls. The UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women is the only multilateral grant-making mechanism that supports local, national and regional efforts to combat this pandemic.
Since it began operations, the UN Trust Fund has distributed more than US$ 50 million to 304 initiatives in 121 countries and territories. With grants currently ranging from US$ 300,000 to US$1 million, UN Trust Fund grantees focus on supporting the implementation of national laws, policies and action plans that address violence against women and girls.
Results of UN Trust Fund-supported initiatives demonstrate how much can be done with critical contributions to address violence against women and girls. For example, UN Trust Fund grantees have:
- Worked to end impunity, by supporting the enforcement of laws and the rule of law;
- Ensured the access of women and girl victims of violence to safety, psychosocial, health, legal aid, and other services, including in the area of sexual and reproductive health;
- Assisted survivors of sexual violence, including in post-conflict situations;
- Addressed the lethal intersections of violence against women and HIV;
- Empowered especially vulnerable groups including adolescent girls, minority and indigenous women.
