Your donation to the UN Foundation’s Fund for UNIFEM will support programs that promote women’s human rights, their economic and political empowerment and gender equality. UNIFEM relies on voluntary financial contributions for all its work. Funding for UNIFEM comes from contributions by governments, foundations, corporations, organizations and individuals like you.
About UNIFEM
UNIFEM is the women’s fund at the United Nations. Founded in 1976, UNIFEM provides financial support and technical assistance to innovative programs promoting women’s empowerment and gender equality in more than 100 countries. Placing the advancement of women's human rights at the center of all of its efforts, UNIFEM focuses its activities on four strategic areas:
- reducing feminized poverty;
- ending violence against women;
- reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS among women and girls; and
- achieving gender equality in democratic governance in times of peace as well as war.
The UN Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women
In 1996, the UN General Assembly, in recognition of UNIFEM’s pioneering role and leadership in the effort to end violence against women (VAW), established a unique trust fund within UNIFEM to support actions to end VAW. The UN Trust Fund in Support of Actions to Eliminate Violence against Women, managed by UNIFEM, is the only multilateral grant-making mechanism that supports local, national and regional efforts to combat VAW. Since it began, more than $10 million has been disbursed to programs around the globe in more than 100 countries.
With grants ranging from $50,000 to $100,000, trust-fund projects conduct public education and awareness campaigns, build coalitions, involve law enforcement, judicial and government agencies and train educators, health-care personnel and police officials to respond to and prevent violence. Many projects strive to alter community attitudes and involve men as allies.
