About UNIFEM

UNIFEM is the women’s fund at the United Nations. Founded in 1976, UNIFEM provides financial support and technical assistance to innovative programs promoting women’s empowerment and gender equality in more than 100 countries. Placing the advancement of women's human rights at the center of all of its efforts, UNIFEM focuses its activities on four strategic areas:

  • reducing feminized poverty;
  • ending violence against women;
  • reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS among women and girls; and
  • achieving gender equality in democratic governance in times of peace as well as war.

The UN Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women

In 1996, the UN General Assembly established a unique trust fund, administered by UNIFEM on behalf of the UN system, to support actions to end violence against women. The UN Trust Fund in Support of Actions to Eliminate Violence against Women is the only multilateral grant-making mechanism exclusively devoted to supporting action to combat this pandemic.

Since it began operations, the UN Trust Fund has distributed more than US$44 million to 291 initiatives in 119 countries and territories. With grants currently ranging from US$300,000 to US$1 million, projects focus on supporting the implementation of national laws, policies and action plans that address violence against women and girls.

Grantees, comprising government and non-governmental organizations, have engaged diverse actors, such as women’s, men’s and youth groups; indigenous communities; religious and traditional leaders; human rights organizations; research organizations; and the media.
