Central Emergency Response Fund

Millions of people are affected by disasters every year. And when a new disaster strikes -- like the flooding in Pakistan, 7.0 earthquake in Haiti, or 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Chile -- victims need help fast.

The United Nations has disaster relief experts in every part of the world ready to provide assistance. But they need resources immediately. Getting the right supplies to the right place takes money.

To speed up relief efforts, the UN has set up a central donation facility -- the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) -- collecting contributions year-round to help ensure that funds are on-hand to allow the UN to save lives.

Help the UN help in time: donate NOW.

Every contribution can help make a difference. As a 501(c) (3) public charity, contributions made to the UN Foundation are tax deductible for U.S. donors. To donate, click here.

CERF Added Value

  • CERF is Fast: Humanitarian agencies faced with a sudden disaster often struggle to find resources to start life-saving operations. The time between an appeal for assistance and disbursement of funds can be long. This delay costs lives. The CERF fills this critical gap, allocating funds within days of an emergency to kick-start relief efforts.

  • CERF is Fair: Decisions are based on needs on the ground, as reported by UN Humanitarian Coordinators. Furthermore, by providing humanitarian assistance to neglected emergencies, the Fund helps redress the imbalance in global aid distribution.

  • CERF is Cost-effective: The CERF promotes prioritization and coordination, reducing gaps and overlaps, thus avoiding wasted resources. More importantly, fast response saves resources, as humanitarian requirements following a disaster can often increase if the situation is not contained immediately.
