The Historic Fortified Town of Campeche, Mexico was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999. Campeche was founded in the third century by the Mayan population, and later became a lucrative port city for the Spanish. The city still boasts remnants of the fortress that once stood there.
The Pre-Hispanic Cities of Chichén Itzá and Uxmal, Mexico, UNESCO World Heritage inscribed in 1988 and 1996, are home to some of the greatest Mayan centers of the Yucatan Peninsula. Chichén Itzá is the second-most visited site in Mexico after Cancun. These ancient ruins are a site not to be missed!
