Director of the Universal Access Project and Policy, Women and Population, United Nations Foundation
Seema Jalan is Director of the Universal Access Project and Policy, Women and Population, at the United Nations Foundation. In this role, she leads the strategic and business planning processes for the initiative and oversees the management of the U.S. policy angles.
Seema comes to the UN Foundation from Women Thrive Worldwide with 10 years of experience on women's human rights, gender policy and foreign assistance reform. At Women Thrive Worldwide, she served as Global Development Policy Director and led the organization's work on aid reform, ensuring U.S. assistance reaches both women and men in developing countries, addressing violence against women internationally, and increasing access to women's economic opportunity.
She conducted advocacy trainings with local women's organizations in partner countries and co-chaired the Coalition to Address Violence Against Women and Girls Globally, a coalition of more than 200 broad-based humanitarian relief, development, faith-based, and human rights organizations. Her work with the U.S. government contributed to the adoption of the first ever government wide strategy to address gender-based violence globally and USAID’s new policy on Gender Equality and Female Empowerment.
Seema has consulted with the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction in Ethiopia and has also worked on women’s human rights issues with Women for Afghan Women and the United Nations. She served as a District Representative and aide to Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney in New York, where she supported the Representative’s work on the wage gap and gender inequity in the workplace. Before working for the government, Seema was an Investment Banking Analyst with Lehman Brothers. In 2007, she was honored as a Rising Star of politics by Campaigns and Elections magazine. Seema received her Master of International Affairs in Economic and Political Development from Columbia University and a B.A from New York University.
