Andrea Austin
Communications Officer, United Nations Foundation
Growing up, Andrea Austin wanted to be President of the United States.
Now, she’s the Communications Officer for the UN Foundation’s Girl Up
campaign. Being told at the age of ten that she couldn’t be president
because she’s female is what motivates her now to promote girls’ rights
and empowerment.
Another passion of Andrea’s is combating human
trafficking. Before coming to the United Nations Foundation, she did
communications for the anti-trafficking organizations Polaris Project
and Shared Hope International.
Andrea has a graduate degree in
International Law and Human Rights from the United Nations mandated
University for Peace in Costa Rica and dual degrees in English and
Spanish from the University of Virginia.
Fun fact: Andrea trains in and teaches Thai boxing and is one of only a few women on the competitive fight team.

One (extra)ordinary girl’s story
Yesterday I went up to New York to film Kumbukani – or Kumba, as her friends call her – a Girl Guide from Malawi who came to attend the Commission on the Status of Women.
When I saw her she appeared…well, ordinary.
