For
poor, oil-importing countries, sustainable
biomass management and bioenergy production
and use are the
key to energy sufficiency in rural
areas. Such renewable and sustainable
energy sources could provide increased
employment, reduce poverty and offer
new opportunities for agricultural
producers. The UN Foundation supports
a number of successful pilot initiatives
with UNDP, UNIDO, and UNEP that highlight
the policies necessary for developing
such energy sources, the investments
necessary, and the activities that
hold the most potential.
In
cooperation with these agencies, and
with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization
and the International Energy Agency,
UNF is setting up/developing/implementing
a policy trust fund that will build
capacity in developing countries to
help them determine the most appropriate
bioenergy policies and development
strategies.
