Tamara Kreinin M.H.S.A.
Executive Director of Women and Population
Tamara Kreinin is the Executive Director of
Women and Population at the United Nations Foundation.
Her experience in health and human services spans
over 25 years. She speaks nationally and internationally
on numerous topics related to social justice. These
include sexual and reproductive health and rights;
adolescent pregnancy, STD, HIV/AIDs, and sexual
abuse prevention; sexuality education; children
in poverty; and advocacy. Kreinin is a critical
resource and spokesperson on these issues for the
press. Kreinin’s numerous appearances include
Good Morning America, The Today Show, CNN, MSNBC,
Fox News, National Public Radio and the BBC. She
is a frequent source for the New York Times, the
Washington Post, the Washington Times, USA Today,
the Chicago Tribune, the Los Angeles Times, the
San Francisco Chronicle, Newsweek, and the Associated
Press, among other publications. Tamara has traveled
the globe as an advocate and public policy advisor
on sexual and reproductive health and rights.
For the past two years Kreinin served as a consultant
for non-profit and philanthropic organizations including
a year as the Interim Executive Director of The
New York Regional Association of Grantmakers whose
members grant four billion dollars each year and,
significant work re-building New Orleans and the
Gulf Coast.
For several years, Kreinin served as President/CEO
of SIECUS, The Sexuality Information and Education
Council of the United States where she was a leader
in the national dialogue on sexual health and rights.
Kreinin significantly broadened its scope of programs,
increased its budget, and increased its visibility.
She enhanced its education and information services
for diverse communities across the US and globally.
Under her leadership it significantly expanded in
international reach. Kreinin developed partnerships
with the media; ranging from engaging teens through
MTV to reaching parents through public television.
Kreinin built a strong policy office in Washington
DC. She supervised nearly 30 staff in 2 offices,
in New York City and Washington DC.
Prior to joining SIECUS, Kreinin was the director
of state and local affairs at the National Campaign
to Prevent Teen Pregnancy in Washington DC. At the
Campaign, she developed and implemented a comprehensive
strategic plan for states and local communities
to reduce teenage pregnancy. Kreinin was previously
a senior program associate at the Southern Regional
Project on Infant Mortality where she organized
and participated in legislative briefings on adolescent
pregnancy prevention, welfare reform, and children
in out-of-home placement. She has advised governors,
legislators, state and local public health officials
and advocates on effective public health policy.
From 1990 to 1994, Kreinin was the founding executive
director of the New Orleans Council for Young Children.
While in Louisiana, Kreinin chaired the committee
that distributed the Ryan White funds in the region.
Kreinin is currently on the Boards of The Center
for Gender and Health Equality (CHANGE) and Inwood
House.
Kreinin has served as a consultant in the areas
of advocacy strategy, education, fundraising, and
public relations. She has worked on numerous local,
state and federal political campaigns. Throughout
her career, Kreinin has been a passionate voice
for social justice and social change.
Kreinin co-authored Girls’ Night Out, a book
about women’s groups across America, published
in August 2002 by Crown, Random House.
